  1. I think it is an effective way to try and get young people to stop smoking. The social media shout-outs and modern, trendy look is just furthering the attractiveness of the ad. I think it could be helpful, but as a smoker, i know that current smokers won't be so easily convinced. It's one thing to tell non smokers to boycott smoking, but another to try and get a current smoker to stop.

  2. I agree with you that the ads are effective for non smokers. But I can definitely see how smokers would not pay attention to the ad as smoking is very addictive and not everyone wants to quit. I think that sometimes the ads can go overboard with the "trendy" look. Have you seen the commercials that involve memes? Here's a link to one of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4srWvLXZRw
I think that this ad goes a bit too far and almost makes a joke out of the subject. What do you think?

  3. That is not effective at all. Its more of a WTF reaction and a ton of confusion. The people who created this ad definitely used too much effects. It wouldn't make a difference at all.

    1. I agree. In hopes to attract young people and teens, they used references the target audience could relate to and understand- which is often an effective way of advertising. And I’ll admit, I thought the video was actually a bit humorous in the beginning. However, as time went on, I felt like the ad went overboard with all the memes and references, thus giving me that same “WTF reaction” you talked about. With that said, to make the ad more effective I would recommend to shorten it so each segment only had one meme instead of a long ad with numerous, or an overwhelming amount of memes. What else do you think they could do to make this video more effective?

  4. The biggest issue about having teens who don't smoke is have parents that don't smoke, My whole family used to smoke and friends families i know smoke all of the time still. It made them start smoking because they were around it so much it makes it part of the 'norm' in their mind seven if they know it is bad. The actions of their parents made an unconscious decision to make them smoke.

    1. I can totally see how that may be true; both of my parents are very big influences on me. In my case, though, the fact that my dad, mom, and grandparents smoked actually made smoking more of a turn off for me. I could see the way people treated them differently and knew I didn't want to be out casted like they were. I distinctly remember a situation when I was at a forensic tournament in 8th grade, waiting to be called up to the stage. My dad had just come back from a smoking break and was standing next to my forensic partner’s mom-a nonsmoker. Her facial expressions showed how much the smell of the smoke that was left threaded through my dad’s clothes bothered her. She was so uncomfortable that I had to whisper for my dad to move to a different part of the room. I could see how embarrassed he was as he, with open and sorrowful eyes, claimed, “Does it smell that bad?” He obviously meant no harm to anyone, yet he was left judged and embarrassed for an addiction that could be prevented. Thus, to avoid being put into a similar situation, I have avoided smoking all together.
